A suitable top-mounted damper can reduce air movement through an unused fireplace chimney when properly closed. The model must be compatible with the fireplace and fuel; savings and draft performance are not guaranteed.

Do not add a closing top damper to a vented gas-log chimney without qualified evaluation. Vented gas logs require the specified permanently open venting arrangement.

No. Products differ. Ask which damper and cap configuration is proposed and whether it suits the chimney.

Not necessarily. Stop fireplace use if smoke enters the room and arrange assessment of the cause before selecting equipment.
