Choosing a Suitable Chimney Cap

A suitable cap helps limit rain, debris, and animal entry at the chimney opening while allowing the required venting. Its size, mounting, screen, and clearances must suit the chimney and appliance.

Will a cap stop every chimney leak?

No. Water may enter through masonry or other parts of the system. A cap is not a substitute for diagnosing the source of a leak.

Can a cap be installed over a nest?

The chimney must first be checked for wildlife and nesting restrictions. Do not trap animals or disturb an active bird nest.

Is a lifetime warranty included?

This archive does not establish current warranty terms. Ask the office for the actual product and workmanship terms before approving a project.

Cap Selection Requires Assessment

Cap designs differ. A professional should evaluate the flue opening, appliance requirements, mounting condition, and needed clearances. A cap alone does not certify a fireplace as safe, eliminate every downdraft, or replace cleaning and inspection.
